CONCEPTUALIZATION
'The Dead Are Rising' is a game concept that was inspired by a mod that I found while playing Left 4 Dead 2.​

Based on that mod, I wanted to improve upon the idea of defending a fort against hordes of zombies - with a weapon shop system and a structured zombie wave system.

WEAPON SHOP SYSTEM
In the original mod, players could only choose their weapons at the start of the game.

I wanted to give players more leeway by adding a weapon shop from which they could buy weapons at any time.

ZOMBIE WAVE SYSTEM
The original mod didn't have a wave system and zombies kept pouring out without end.​ There was a lack of breathing room and recovery for the players.
​
This made me realize how important it was to create a wave system that could end after a specific number of zombies were defeated.
This allowed players to recover after the end of each wave and give them a fair challenge.

GAME LOOP
The player starts the zombie wave.

Killing zombies gives the player money - which the player can use at the weapon shop.
​
Killing all of the zombies in the current wave ends the wave.
​

GAME BALANCING
Most of the game's balancing involved the enemies and weapons.
I gathered feedback from players regarding this to make sure that the enemies and weapons were well-balanced.
This includes assessing the players' overall abilities in handling the zombies and whether the players found the weapons' price range and damage reasonable.
